Cross Innovation Hub

Driving collaborations for innovation

Our mission

Our mission is to drive innovation and translate outcomes into benefits for patients and the public. This only happens in an environment that supports multidisciplinary approaches and collaboration. The Cross Innovation Hub aims to facilitate partnerships between clinicians and researchers by providing a place for ideas to grow. We have arranged a great opportunity between our organisations for researchers and clinicians to shadow each other, please go to our shadowing page to apply.

Colin Chu is a Research Group Leader at UCL and Consultant Ophthalmologist at Moorfields. He benefits from working across both organisations.

Collaboration for Innovation

There is a continued need to share, combine and collaborate across Moorfields Eye Hospital and the UCL IoO (Institute of Ophthalmology). If you are one of the following, this hub could be useful to you:

Researchers who have a problem that a clinical solution could fix
Junior staff with an idea or concept that needs input from a clinical / academic colleague
Clinical staff with an interest in academia but do not know where to start
Staff with an idea that needs input from others from other disciplines

Who are we?

We are based at NIHR Moorfields Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and are facilitating more open working collaborations between our two partners, Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL Institute of Ophthalmology.

We are focused on maximising expertise and resource at our world-leading centre. We are allowing staff at both sites the space to ignite initial sparks of ideas and help make them into working partnerships/relationships.

How will we do this?

This works in two ways. The first is hosting events where you can meet and speak to each other in a more relaxed environment about your own aims and passions. The second is with this site and the hub of information including the people who are keen and able to forge collaborative relationships.

Early successes

We have now formalised our shadowing opportunities across sites. We have the capacity to facilitate researchers to visit clinics and clinicians to visit the lab. Initial feedback from this arrangement is that there is an increased appreciation of each other's work and the impact each and every employee can have on patients and their families. Seeing each environment creates leaps in understanding of the reality of day-to-day professions.

“I was fortunate to be an observer at Moorfields Eye Hospital supported by the Cross-Innovation Hub. As a UCL PhD student in biomedical engineering with ambitions to pursue ophthalmic medicine as a clinician in the future, this programme offered a meaningful and practical exposure to true clinical practice. I received direct instruction on hospital protocols and etiquette, and I was able to deploy those teachings during real patient interactions.”
